What is root canal treatment?
Root canal treatment is usually done to relieve pain from an infected tooth while preserving the natural tooth.
If you are currently experiencing prolonged tooth pain or sensitivity, there is a chance that you might need a root canal treatment.
Is root canal treatment for me?
Persistent Tooth Discomfort
If you have been feeling persistent or a nagging discomfort in your face, jaw or teeth because of a tooth inflammation, it might be a sign that you require root canal treatment.

Chips and Cracks on Tooth
If you have chips and cracks on your teeth because of dental trauma or bruxism (teeth grinding) for a prolonged period of time, there is a higher likelihood of a tooth infection which might require a root canal treatment.

Sensitive Teeth
If you have been experiencing sensitive teeth akin to a dull ache or sharp pain when eating or drinking hot or cold foods, it is possible that you might require root canal treatment.

Swollen or Tender Gums
If you have an inflammation in your teeth, you might also experience swollen or tender gums. In severe cases, this might result in extra sensitive gums that ooze pus.

Loose Teeth
If you have loose or shaky teeth that feels as if they might fall out of their socket, it might be because of a tooth infection. This might warrant a root canal treatment.

Discoloured Tooth
If your tooth has darkened or become discoloured, there is a high chance that you might have an untreated tooth infection which might require root canal treatment.

Root canal treatment procedure

Consultation and Assessment
Your first step begins with a consultation and assessment with a dentist.
Your preferred root canal dentist will perform a few tests to see whether you are suitable for root canal treatment.
These tests usually include X-rays and a root vitality assessment.
Numbing the Affected Tooth
If you are suitable for root canal treatment, your affected tooth will be completely numbed with local anaesthetic before the procedure. This ensures that you do not feel any discomfort during the root canal treatment.
Cleaning of the Pulp
Once you have been numbed, a protective sheet called the rubber dam is placed over your affected tooth to isolate the area from the rest of your mouth.
An opening is made in the crown of your tooth.
Fine dental tools are used to clean the pulp from the pulp chamber and the root canals. The pulp chamber is then shaped and prepped for the filling.
Placement of the Filling
Depending on the complexity of your root canal treatment, the condition of your pulp and your initial symptoms, a temporal filling might be placed before the final filling.
Once the teeth is ready, your dentist will place a permanent filling followed by a post-core and a crown.
Placement of the Crown
Once the final filling has been placed, a crown is laid over the tooth. The crown is important as it seals and protects the newly-treated tooth from further infections.
Root canal treatment vs Tooth extraction
Root Canal Treatment
Restore your natural tooth- Saves your teeth from removal by restoring the original tooth form and function.
- Do not need costlier dental procedures like dental implants or dental bridges to restore teeth.
- Relieves you of any discomfort and pain while preserving your natural tooth structure.
- Usually requires multiple dental visits to remove the infected pulp and place the crown.
Tooth Extraction
Removes your infected tooth entirely- Removes the problem tooth entirely but leaves a gap where the extraction site is.
- Usually more affordable than root canal treatment but might require more costly dental procedures like dental implants or dental bridges later.
- Relieves you of discomfort and pain immediately after extraction but might cause difficulty chewing and biting.
- Usually requires only one visit to remove your tooth but might require a separate visit for additional dental treatments like dental implants.

Alternatives to root canal treatment

Tooth Extraction
A tooth extraction is usually done when there is severe tooth damage or tooth decay. As this removes the entire tooth, it is usually recommended as the last resort by restorative dentists.

Dental Implants
Dental implants are able to replace a missing tooth after a tooth extraction is done.

Direct Pulp Capping
Direct pulp capping is done by placing material directly over the exposed pulp. It is typically done when the exposure is limited and when the exposed pulp appears healthy and shows no signs of inflammation or decay.

Pulpotomy
A pulpotomy is a procedure where the inflamed pulp is removed. It is usually done as an emergency procedure to relieve pain in adults until a root canal treatment can be done or when a child has not had a fully formed root.

- Persistent teeth pain

- Discolouration of your tooth
- Swollen gums
- Pain when you bite, chew or even touch the affected tooth

Why are root canal treatments more expensive than tooth extractions?
Root canal treatments are usually more expensive than tooth extractions because of the following reasons:
- Root canal treatments save the tooth instead of removing it
- Root canal treatment is considered a complex dental procedure as it requires knowledge and skill to work with the intricate roots (nerves and blood vessels). Tooth extraction on the other hand is simply a complete removal.
How much does a root canal treatment procedure cost?
The cost of a root canal procedure at Elite Dental ranges from $500 – $850.
The final cost will be dependent on the following factors:
- The placement of the tooth
- Complexity of the procedure
- Whether you require further procedures before root canal treatment
- Whether you are covered by dental insurance.
Are root canal treatments painful?
Root canal treatments are not meant to be painful, and should not give you any pain.
They are a dental procedure that helps you to save your teeth while stopping the pain from the infection of your nerve.
However, just like any other dental procedure, you might experience slight discomfort during the procedure because of the pressure from the tools.
If you are avoiding root canal treatment because of the fear of pain, there is nothing to worry about!
Should you require further sedation to calm your nerves during the treatment, it is possible to ask for stronger sedation methods.
Can root canal treatments fail?
Yes, just like any other dental procedure, it is possible for root canal treatments to fail. This is especially so if treatment has been indicated despite lack of patient suitability.
However, the rate of failure is extremely low with a success rate of more than 95%.
Most root canal failures occur because of the following reasons:
- Leaked restoration
- Loose crown
- Tooth or sealing materials degrading
- Tooth fracture
- New decay because of poor oral hygiene
It is thus, extremely important to head to experienced dentists who use high quality materials for your root canal treatment.
An experience dentist can help prevent root canal treatment failure by ensuring that you are:
- Suitable for the procedure
- Ensuring that your crown placement fits you well to prevent further entry of infection
- Using high-quality materials to ensure that your root canal treatment lasts for a prolonged amount of time.
